The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology is a Department of the Interior and Local Government attached agency tasked with directing, supervising, and controlling the administration and operation of all district, city, and municipal jails in the Philippines, as well as the safekeeping and development of inmates, who are officially classified as persons deprived of liberty (PDL).
The Jail Bureau operates and maintains a Provincial Jail Administrator’s Office in each province, which is led by a Provincial Administrator and is responsible for overseeing the execution of jail services in all district, city, and municipal jails under its authority. A District Jail, led by a District Warden, may be constructed in big cities or groups of towns. A City or Municipal Warden oversees both the City and Municipal Jails.
