A good news awaits seniors who will have their upcoming birthdays as a law granting them specific cash grant was signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. He signed into law the RA No. 11982 or the “Expanded Centenarians Act” which amplifies the Filipino culture of caring for the elders.
According to National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC), the said law granting the seniors cash gifts honor the healthy lifestyle of the elder to longer their life.
"The clamor of older persons/senior citizens and the general public to extend or expand the benefits and privileges to those milestone years apart from those reaching 100 years old as centenarians, were heard and now being realized for the enjoyment of our beloved older persons,'' NCSC said.
According to the main author of the law Senador Ramon Revilla Jr., he aims to felicitate elders by giving them cash grants that they can use.
In accordance to the law, Filipinos who will reach the age of 80 years shall receive a cash gift amounting to P10,000 and every five years after that, until the age of 95. Filipinos who reach 100 years old and above will continue to receive a cash gift worth P100,000.
Previously, the House of Representatives passed a bill boosting the financial gift for Filipino centenarians who reach 101 years old from P100,000 to P1 million on third and final reading.
To recap, the Centenarian Act of the Philippines, officially known as Republic Act No. 10868, is a law that was signed by former Philippine President Benigno Aquino III on June 23, 2016. The law grants Filipino citizens who have reached the age of 100 years or more a one-time gift of Php 100,000 and a letter of felicitation from the President of the Philippines.
The Centenarian Act also provides for the creation of a “Centenarian Office” in every province, city, and municipality in the country, which will be responsible for implementing the law and ensuring that the rights of centenarians are protected. The law also mandates that government agencies and local government units shall provide priority services to centenarians.
