According to the fintech company, Filipino travelers to the UK, France, Germany, and Italy can now make cashless payments using GCash.
GCash is a popular mobile wallet and financial services platform in the Philippines. It allows users to perform a wide range of financial transactions conveniently using their smartphones. Developed by Globe Telecom, one of the leading telecommunications providers in the country, GCash offers various features that make it a versatile digital payment solution.
GCash enables users to link their bank accounts or credit/debit cards to the app, allowing them to transfer funds, pay bills, shop online, and make in-store purchases at supported merchants. It also provides a peer-to-peer money transfer service, allowing users to send money to other GCash users instantly.
Additionally, GCash offers services such as cash-in and cash-out, which allow users to load funds into their GCash wallet or withdraw cash from it through partner outlets, ATMs, or authorized agents. Users can also use GCash to buy prepaid load for mobile phones, pay for utilities, book movie tickets, purchase insurance, and even invest in funds.
GCash has become particularly popular in the Philippines due to its convenience, accessibility, and wide acceptance among merchants. It has played a significant role in promoting financial inclusion by providing digital financial services to individuals who may not have access to traditional banking services.
Now, the retailers that accept GCash payments through Alipay+ include Harrods, Liberty London, and Harvey Nichols in the UK; Printemps in France; Müller and dm-drogerie markt in Germany; itTaxi and IVS Group in Italy; and Printemps, Printemps, and dm-drogerie markt in the UK.
“In line with our fervent commitment to make our customers’ everyday lives better and more convenient, we want to make sure that they can maximize their GCash account not only locally but wherever they are across the world. We look forward to expanding to other markets abroad soon and to partner with even more merchants in 2023,” GCash president and CEO Martha Sazon said.
To use, simply search for the Alipay+ logo at the cash register in participating retailers. To pay, simply open the GCash app, choose the QR or Pay QR option, and scan the merchant's code. Alternatively, you can press "Pay Abroad with Alipay+" to let the retailer scan your QR code.
GCash claimed that through a partnership with Alipay+, it is continually extending its global payment touchpoints.
Previously, GCash was already accepted in a limited number of Singaporean stores as well as those in Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. The collaboration between Gcash and Alipay+ allowed users to use the e-wallet in merchants that recognize Alipay+.
Moreover, GCash was also accepted in Australia, Italy, and the United States as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has approved the beta launch of the mobile e-wallet GCash Overseas, which allowed Filipinos to use overseas SIM cards to use its services.
