According to Assistant Secretary for Strategic Communications Romel Lopez, senior citizens in need who are enrolled in the Department of Social Welfare and Developments (DSWD) Social Pension program will now start receiving a monthly stipend of Php1,000 in February 2024.
"We expect that the distribution of the social pension for the first semester with its increased amount will commence this February 2024,” Asst. Secretary Lopez, the DSWD spokesperson stated.
Asst. Sec. Lopez added that the agency's 2024 budget already includes the money needed to implement Republic Act 11916, also known as an Act Increasing the Social Pension of Indigent Senior Citizens.
“The funds increasing the monthly stipend for social pensioners were already approved and included in the 2024 budget of the agency,” the DSWD spokesperson noted.
Republic Act No. 11916, which lapsed into law in July 2022, increases the monthly pension of elderly poor people by 100%, from Php500 to Php1,000, in an effort to help them cope with the effects of rising inflation.
To help with daily expenses and other medical needs, qualified beneficiaries get a monthly social pension for seniors, paid out on a semi-annual basis. The total payout amount is Php6,000.
"The social pension is provided to eligible and qualified indigent senior citizens to augment their daily subsistence and address their medical needs,” the DSWD spokesperson reiterated.
Asst. Sec. Lopez claims that the social pension scheme provides continuous support from family or relatives to elderly indigents who are sick, fragile, or disabled, or who do not have a steady source of income.
Senior citizens are deemed eligible for the program, according to the DSWD official, if they do not currently receive pensions from any private insurance company, the Armed Forces and Police Mutual Benefit Association, Inc. (AFPMBAI), the Social Security System (SSS), the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), or any other system.
In 2024, 4,085,066 elderly people who are impoverished will be eligible for their monthly stipend under the social pension scheme.
