Those who want to pursue Doctoral Degrees in Japan can now apply and take advantage of a program offered by the government of Japan through the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) an international English-speaking postgraduate institution launched in 1959 that centers studies on engineering, environment, and management studies.
Applicants may choose between Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (RS-GIS) study or Mechatronics and Machine Intelligence (MMI) to be conducted at the AIT School of Engineering and Technology (SET).
Based on the announcement, eligible countries from Southeast Asia include Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia.
While in South Asia, the scholarship is being offered to countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
In order to quality for the scholarship, an applicant must have a strong academic records both during his/her undergraduate and graduate studies.
Additionally, he/she must normally hold a four-year Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree, preferably with a combination of course and thesis work, from an institution of good standing, acceptable to AIT.
With regards to minimum GPA requirement for admission to the Doctoral program, an applicant must achieved a 3.50 or equivalent at the Master’s degree level.
Moreover, an applicant must be able to submit a brief outline of the dissertation research proposal which includes the required research facilities as needed.
In terms of English proficiency requirement, the TOEFL of an applicant must adhere to the following: for computer-based, the benchmark would be 210 or iTOEFL of 76 or IELTS-Academic of 6 with writing and overall or AIT-EET Score of 6 or equivalent.
The Japanese government will shoulder all the scholars' expenses. The coverage of the scholarship includes tuition and registration fees for a maximum 6 semesters, bursary and accommodation costs, visa fee, medical insurance, student union fee, research support and one round-trip international air travel-economy class for non-Thai applicants.
