The application season for Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA)'s Scholarship Programs is just around the corner. In a Facebook post, OWWA recently published two (2) scholarship programs that soon will be opened by the agency.
The post highlighted the differences between Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) and OFW Dependent Scholarship Program (OFWDSP) which shall be available for qualified dependents of OFWs.
In order for you to better understand the OWWA scholarship programs, we will discuss to you pertinent information about them one by one.
Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP)
The Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) comprised two categories which include Category 1 and 2.
The Category 1 is open for incoming first year college students while the Category 2 is open for second to fifth year college students.
Both applicants from the categories should be child of an active OWWA member or a sibling of a single active OWWA member.
Both grantees of the categories shall be entitled to a maximum of P60,000 financial assistance each year.
For Category 1:
- single;
- grade 12 graduating student;
- not more than 21 years old;
- with a General Weighted Average (GWA) of 80% or equivalent;
- have taken DOST-SEI exam; and
- belong to the top 1000 qualifiers of the DOST national qualifying exam.
For Category 2:
- single;
- not more than 30 years old;
- with a GWA not lower than 85% or equivalent;
- no failed grades;
- enrolled in colleges/ universities based in the Philippines.
Applications for any of the categories are done via regional offices where applicants are advised to prepare the initial necessary documentary requirements:
- proof of identity;
- proof of grades from previous school year. for example: form 137 or form 10 (TOR), form 138 or report card, or certificate of grades from the actual school.
OFW Dependent Scholarship Program (OFWDSP)
This scholarship program is also divided into two categories which shall include Category 1 for incoming first year college students and Category 2 for second to fifth year students.
Both categories require applicants to be child of an active OWWA member or a sibling of a single active OWWA member.
Qualified applicants for both the categories will be able to receive Php20,000 financial assistance each year.
For Category 1 and 2:
- single;
- not more than 21 years old for Category 1 and not more than 30 years old for Category 2;
- OFWs who receive a monthly salary of not more than US $600 or lower or equivalent;
- with passing grade or GWA;
- enrolled in colleges/ universities based in the Philippines.
Both applicants of the categories are advised to apply to the corresponding regional offices and prepare for the initial following documents:
- proof of identity;
- proof of OFW income. for example: Overseas Employment Contract (OEC), pay slip, and bank remittance slip from employer.
