A good news awaits women in the country as the world celebrates National Women's Month because starting July this year, free mammogram and ultrasound services will be provided by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) said House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez.
The scheme according to the House of Representatives' press release is a priority program of the Marcos administration that aims to attempt to detect early signs of breast cancer among women which will be conducted every year.
The announcement was made after Romualdez's recent meeting with PhilHealth officials, leading a 300-plus strong members of the house. President Marcos applauded the PhilHealth's initiative highlighting the commitment of its administration to prioritize the health and well-being of Filipino women. The program will make sure women's access to crucial preventive care.
Romualdez also had a follow-up meeting regarding the program with PhilHealth officials ensuring the success implementation of the program stressing its positive impact on the health and well-being of each woman in the country.
Romualdez added that the solutions to various health concerns arising with women is early detection. Helping women with their financial burden with essential services is the PhilHealth's core value which intends to save lives and promote a healthier future for all the Filipino women. Romualdez shared that the attempt is in line with his wife's personal advocacy.
According to the Speaker, he has a hope that the free services PhilHealth will offer will build a good relationship between the Congress and the agency in delivering basic healthcare services to the public.
To recap, PhilHealth announced an increased benefits to its members after Romualdez's successful call, which is a 1,400% hike in "Z benefit package" for breast cancer patients, an increase package of P100,000 to P1.4million.
Data reported that breast cancer is among the women's top five (5) cause of death. A report in August last year recorded up to 86,484 cancer cases tallied every year, 27,163 of those are breast cancer cases. The same report stated that there are 9,926 women who died from breast cancer, making it the third deadliest type of cancer in women.
