For the year 2025, the Philippines and Japan have collaborated to allow Filipino and Japanese researchers to conduct fully-funded research projects and they are now calling interested applicants to take these opportunities while up for grabs.
The Department of Science and Technology will team up with Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) to fulfill the Joint Research Project programs.
For the DOST-JSPS Joint Research Project, this shall be a bilateral agreement which aims to support research conducted jointly by Filipino and Japanese researchers.
Hence, the Joint Research Project in return shall be able to foster international scientific cooperation between the two participating nationalities.
Scholars under this Joint Research Project shall be funded by DOST each year with approximately Php1.2 million.
This amount shall be alloted for the scholars' research project, including travel expenses between Philippines and Japan, research-related travel expenses in the Philippines, medical and accident insurance, daily allowance, accommodation, and domestic travel expenses in Japan of the Filipino team.
Qualified applicants for this Joint Research Project include those Filipino-PhD holder, employed full-time in any DOST-recognized national, public or private universities or research institution.

Another collaborative research program currently open for application is the DOST-JST Joint Research Project. This Joint Research Project is also geared towards promoting and strengthening collaboration between researchers from Japan and the Philippines.
There will be up to five (5) research projects that will be funded by both the Japan-side and Philippines-side.
As for Japan, they will provide a total of direct expenses approximately JPY24 million (Php 8,880,000) and up to Php10,000,000 direct expenses from the Philippines.
Qualified applicants for this Joint Research Project are those who belong to Philippines research institution and higher education institutions.
