The U.S. Embassy in the Philippines has opened a gateway to an exceptional opportunity for the youth of Southeast Asia. With great pleasure, it announces the application call for the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellowships for Spring 2024. This program, designed to empower and educate young leaders across the region, holds immense promise for nurturing a generation of individuals who will shape the future of Southeast Asia.
The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is a dynamic and robust program initiated by the U.S. Department of State to empower and connect young leaders from across the ASEAN region. It is founded on the belief that young people are key drivers of change, innovation, and progress. YSEALI aims to equip emerging leaders with the knowledge, skills, and networks they need to address the region's most pressing challenges effectively.
Candidates from the Philippines interested in civic engagement, environmental issues, and social entrepreneurship & economic development are invited to apply for the Spring 2024 YSEALI Academic Fellowship by the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines. These five-week in-person courses will run from the middle of April until the middle of May. Seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures will all be a part of the five-week course. Along with coursework and classroom activities, educational trips, site visits, leadership exercises, and service opportunities in the local community will be offered.
Who can apply for the fellowship?
The YSEALI Academic Fellows are individuals who exhibit leadership via their academic work, community involvement, extracurricular activities, or their profession. They are either full-time undergraduate students or recent graduates. One must:
- be between the ages of 18 and 25 at the time of application, although exceptional applicants over 25 may be considered if they meet all other eligibility requirements;
- be a citizen and resident of the Philippines;
- be a full-time undergraduate student from college, university, or other institutions of higher learning; or have graduated in the past four years;
- be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English;
- not be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States;
- be eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa
What are the benefits under the fellowship?
All participant expenses, including program administration, foreign and visa travel, travel allowances, domestic travel, and ground transportation, as well as book, cultural, mailing, and incidental allowances, housing, and subsistence costs, will be covered by the program. The program will give the Fellows a technology stipend if it needs to switch to a virtual format.
Application and Fellowship Timeline:
- September 18, 2023: Application opens
- October 23, 2023 11:59 PM, Philippine Standard Time: Application closes
- November 2023: Notification of shortlisted applicants.
- January – February 2024: Announcement of results
- Between March-April 2024: Academic Fellowship Program (contingent upon health, safety, and travel conditions)
