In an attempt to deepen people-to-people engagement and strengthen educational ties with the ten (10) member nations of ASEAN, the Fulbright U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program is now open for applications for the year 2024-2025.
What studies are covered in U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program?
The U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program comprised of subjects which include the following:
- public health;
- the South China Sea;
- Indo-Pacific focus;
- ASEAN economic integration;
- banking governance;
- human trafficking;
- STEM education;
- food safety;
- and legal education.
What professions may apply for U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program?
The U.S.–ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program shall be available for the following individuals:
- university faculty;
- foreign ministry or other government officials;
- professional staff of the private sector;
- think tanks; and
- other National Government Organizations (NGOs) in the ASEAN Member States.
What are the eligibility criteria under U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program?
Those who want to apply for U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program must be able to satisfy the qualifications set out by Fulbright such as:
- Philippine Citizenship and is residing in the Philippines at the time of application and selection process;
- should be university faculty, foreign ministry and government officials, or professionals in the private sector, think tanks, and other NGOs whose work focuses on U.S.-ASEAN issues;
- have a significant record of scholarly or professional accomplishment;
- proficiency in English;
- be able to conduct advanced research or university lecturing in the United States that begins no earlier than January 2026 and starts no later than March 2026;
- be in good health to pursue research work in the United States; and
- be committed to returning to the Philippines immediately upon completion of the research program.
What is the duration of U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program?
The U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program shall allow scholars to travel to the United States for a maximum of four (4) months during the first half of 2026 which starts from January to March.
As such, they will have to conduct scholarly and professional research on priority issues to the U.S.-ASEAN relationship and ASEAN.
What are the benefits under U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program?
After being selected for the U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program, scholars will be provided the following comprehensive grants:
- monthly stipend between US $2,710 (Php153,304) and $3,145/month (Php177,912) depending on the U.S. city;
- a direct-flight, round-trip economy-class air ticket;
- a one-time $1,250 (Php70,712) Professional and Settling-in allowance; and
- qualifying university lab and research fees up to $3,000 (Php169,710), as necessary.
What are the necessary documentary requirements for U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program?
The following documents listed below are the requirements that must be submitted by interested applicants through the U.S.- ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program's application portal provided:
- completed online application at https://apply.iie.org/fvsp2025;
- updated curriculum vitae/résume;
- project proposal;
- writing samples of no more than 20 pages and a bibliography;
- letter of invitation from the U.S. host institution;
- three (3) letters of recommendation;
- NBI clearance secured not earlier than six (6) months before the application;
- scanned copy of official or certified true copy of transcript of records; and
- scanned copy of official or certified true copy of diploma/s.
