Kindergartens in Singapore offer children aged three to six years old up to three years of pre-school education. Nursery, Kindergarten 1 (K1), and Kindergarten 2 (K2) are the common names for the three years .
Kindergartens provide a setting in which children can learn how to connect with others while also preparing them for formal instruction in primary school. Learning language (both written and spoken) and numbers, as well as developing personal and social skills, games, music, and outdoor play, are all included in the activities. Children are taught two languages: English and their native tongue (Mandarin, Malay, or Tamil). Because many private or church-based kindergartens do not provide Malay or Tamil, non-Chinese students may learn Standard Mandarin at these kindergartens.

The kindergartens are run by private organizations such as community foundations, religious organizations, and civic or corporate organizations. The Early Childhood Development Agency has around 200 kindergartens registered. Child care centers and international schools both operate kindergartens.
Primary education consists of a four-year foundation stage (Primary 1 to 4) and a two-year orientation stage (Primary 5 to 6). Since 2003, pupils who are homeschooling, attending a full-time religious institution, or those with special needs who are unable to attend mainstream schools have been granted exemptions.

Because English is the lingua franca of worldwide commerce, science, and technology, the Ministry of Education has chosen to teach it as a first language in elementary school. As a result, a solid foundation in the English language is seen as a necessary talent to acquire. Bilingualism is regarded as a cornerstone of Singapore's educational system, and all primary school pupils are required to choose a second, mother tongue language (Chinese, Malay, or Tamil) to guarantee that they can take advantage of opportunities available in the global context in the future. For students whose native language is not one of the eligible Mother Tongue languages, exemptions are possible (such as Nepali).
