Over the past couple of years, the education landscape has undergone a radical transformation, with the pandemic necessitating the rapid adoption of online and blended learning modalities.
Hence, the Department of Education (DepEd) has unveiled its plans today, August 3, for the commencement of the school year 2023-2024, which was set on August 29.
It was initially planned by the DepEd to resume classes on August 28 but the date falls on a holiday in observance of the National Heroes’ Day.
Meanwhile, according to the advisory, private schools have the option to open classes on any date starting the first Monday of June but not later than the last day of August pursuant to Republic Act 11480.
To recap, on August 22, 2022, classes for the SY 2022–2023 began. More than 28 million kids returned to school two years after the Covid-19 outbreak started, according to DepEd data.
In addition to the five-day in-person classes, public schools were permitted to use blended learning for the first three months.
DepEd started providing face-to-face instruction in all public schools on November 2, 2022.
Face-to-face instruction was prohibited in SYs 2020–2021 and 2021–2022, due to the potential harm of the Covid-19 epidemic.
Subsequently, DepEd switched to remote learning instead, allowing students to learn from home using a variety of learning delivery methods, including blended learning, which combines two learning delivery methods, online learning, radio and television-based instruction, and printed/offline modules.
Currently, the announcement of the opening of classes for SY 2023-2024 by the Department of Education reflects a pivotal moment in the nation's educational journey.
It symbolizes not only a return to normalcy but also an embrace of the lessons learned during these unprecedented times.
DepEd's commitment to adaptability, safety, inclusivity, and quality education showcases a resilient spirit that will undoubtedly propel the Philippine education system towards a brighter future.
As the new academic year unfolds, it is a collective responsibility to support DepEd's endeavors and ensure that every learner has the opportunity to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
