We all know that Labor Day is being commemorated and celebrated on the first day of May (May 1). However, why do we celebrate it and consider as holiday? Or how and when did it started?
Labor Day: Significance in the Philippines
According to research, the first Labor Day in the Philippines was commemorated on May 1, 1903, when thousands of workers marched through Malacanang seeking better working conditions from an American-led administration.

The Philippine Congress enacted a bill on April 8, 1908, declaring May 1st as a national holiday in the Philippines. The inaugural Labor Day commemoration took place on May 1, 1913, when 36 labor unions met at the Cine Oriente in C.M. to hold a labor congress. Recto Street is a street in Recto, Italy.

Payment of Wages:
May 1 is a National Regular Holiday and according to the Department of Labor and Employment DOLE, the following payment of wages should be applied:
- If the employee did not work, they will be paid 100% of their wages for the day if it falls on a work day.
- If the employee does work on the day, they will be paid 200% of their wages for the day.
- If the employee works in excess of 8 hours (overtime), they will receive an additional 30% of their hourly rate.

Computation:
Hourly rate of basic wage x 200%
x 130% x no. (#) of hours worked
= Total Pay for Rest Day Overtime on a Regular Holiday
- If the employee works on a regular holiday that also falls on their rest day, they will receive an additional 30% of their daily wage of 200%.
Computation:
(Basic wage + COLA) x 200%
- 30% (Basic wage x 200%)
= Total Pay for Rest Day Overtime on a Regular Holiday
- If the employee works in excess of 8 hours (overtime) on a regular holiday that also falls on their rest day, they will receive an additional 30% of their hourly rate.
Computation:
Hourly rate of the basic wage x 200%
x 130% x 30% x no. (#) of hours worked
= Total Pay for Rest Day Overtime on a Regular Holiday
