The outbreak of the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) left most of us stuck at home, knowing not what to do. You may be tired of looking for ways on how you can be more productive while you're at home but here's one thing you can do. The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) opened free online courses that people can take advantage of while they're not doing anything.
Isidro Lapeña, the Directro General of TESDA, said that people can choose from the whole variety of courses that they can take while they're at home.

They can choose from courses that are applicable sa kanilang mga kabahayan, at kanilang pamilya (for their homes, and their families). They can use it also even after itong period ng coronavirus (the period of coronavirus)."
In Translation: People can choose from courses that are applicable while they're at home; and their families can take it too. They can also use it even after this Coronavirus period.
What's more is that people can still utilize it after the lockdown imposed! So even after the lockdown, if you're still interested to take the free online courses, you can do so!

Enrollees flooded the courses
Karlo Nograles, Cabinet Secretary, said that on the day of opening, a total of 19,598 people flooded the courses; that the 68 free online courses were all filled and people were happy about it.
In addition to that, Nograles said that the top courses or sectors that people chose are the sectors of:
- Entrepreneurship
- Information and Communication Technology
- Electrical and Electronics
- 21st Century Skills

Nograles emphasized the fact that these courses are all free and that these aren't just passive courses. There are, in fact, quizzes and assessments in each and every course. In addition to that, Nograles said that there are Certificates of Completion (CoC) that is given to people when they finish.
Libre po ito (this is for free) and after undergoing online activities and passing the quizzes, learners may download Certificates of Completion as proof that they finished the online course."
Where else would you be able to find better services than this? You learned and you got a certificate for it so you can use it in the future!

In the free online courses that TESDA is offering, Lapeña said that this is one thing that people can take advantage of while they're not doing anything.

This is something productive that (our countrymen) can make use of."
According to Lapeña, the programs that they are offering included courses in the fields and sectors of the following:
- Automotive
- Agriculture
- Entrepreneurship
- Electrical and Electronics
- Human Health or Health Care
- Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR)
- Lifelong Learning Skills
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
- Social Community Development
- Maritime
- Processed Food and Beverages
- Technical and Vocational Education and Training
- Tourism
- 21st Century Skills

TESDA's Contribution to Fight COVID-19
Aside from the free online courses they've released to the public, TESDA also is helping the entire country in the fight against COVID-19. There are TESDA Regional/Provincial Training Centers that produced and donated face masks to COVID-19 frontliners.
With their partnership with certain private sectors, TESDA was able to distribute a total of 57,000 face masks around the country. In addition to that, they also were able to distribute 266 face shields to Luzon frontliners, 250 face shields in Mindanao, as well as 809 face shields in Visayas.
Nograles said that there are even training centers that are starting to produce disinfectants, suits, sanitizers and even other protective equipment.
Some Tesda regional offices are also starting to make protective suits, disinfectants, and sanitizers; while TTIs (Tesda Training Institutions) have been continuously baking bread and pastries and distributing them to our frontliners."

TESDA's move of releasing free online courses to the public is one way of them helping the public for long-term. This can be looked at as a form of "easing the boredom" but in reality, these courses and the skills people can pick up can be beneficial to the overall lives of some people.
