United World Colleges (UWC) Philippines is a part of the United World Colleges movement, which is an international educational organization with a network of schools and colleges worldwide. The UWC movement aims to promote peace and understanding through education by bringing together students from diverse backgrounds.
UWC Philippines is one of the national committees affiliated with the UWC movement. It selects and sponsors students from the Philippines to attend UWC schools and colleges located in different countries around the world. These schools provide a challenging and transformative educational experience, emphasizing international understanding, intercultural exchange, and community service.
The UWC Philippines National Committee is responsible for the selection process of students and coordinates with the UWC movement to facilitate their placements. They seek out talented young individuals who demonstrate a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities and show potential for leadership and academic excellence.
By sending students to UWC schools and colleges, UWC Philippines aims to develop young leaders who will contribute to the promotion of peace, sustainability, and cross-cultural understanding. The UWC experience encourages students to engage in community service projects, explore global issues, and develop critical thinking and communication skills.
UWC Philippines also fosters a network of UWC alumni in the country, connecting past UWC students and providing them with opportunities for continued growth and collaboration.
Now, here's the catch, even without a diploma, Filipino high school students who have yet to graduate can now realize their ambition of studying overseas. According to a statement from UWC Philippines, the country's senior high school system's alternative diploma program is now accepting applications for the school year 2024-2026.
The two-year curriculum, known as the "International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)," enables exceptional Filipino students between the ages of 16 and 17 to attend any UWC school or college in one of 160 countries, including Canada, the United States, Japan, Singapore, Germany, Estwatini, Costa Rica, Tanzania, and India.
IBDP equips students with knowledge and abilities in six academic areas such as Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts.
The students will study these subjects not all at once, but rather in two parts: three at a standard level and the remaining three at a higher level.
The subjects may differ based on the geographical location and specialty areas of the university the student is enrolled in, according to the UWC website.
Students are required to complete the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Activity, Services (CAS) components of the IBDP in addition to their subjects.
Those who need financial aid can apply for one of the four scholarship programs offered by UWC, which provide partial, full, or all-inclusive coverage of tuition, lodging and board, books, IB exam registration fees, extracurricular field trips, and other expenses.
The IBDP is a substitute for the senior high school system in the country and is accepted by prestigious local universities like the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University.
Filipino citizens who are presently enrolled in a Philippine-accredited institution are eligible applicants. Additionally, they have to be under 18 when the program first begins.
Applications for SY 2024-2026 must be filed on the UWC Philippines website here (https://apply.uwc.org/) and are accepted until June 15, 2023. More details can be found on their website via this link https://www.uwc.org/academiclife.
